Tauranga Wins First Comwell Cup Race
WELLINGTON. Thu. (Sp.)—The first race in the Cornwell Cup was sailed on the Paremata Harbour yesterday.
The Whangarei boat sailed by R. Wilkinson and G. Reynolds got away to a good start, but dropped back and was not placed. The race was sailed in a fresh northwesterly wind and was won by the Tauranga crew (R. Bailey and B. Hartley). The Auckland boat, which was second home, tore .her spinnaker on the second run down wind and it was in danger of blowing out in any of the gusts but it lasted the race. The contest will be continued until one boat has been successful on three occasions. Yesterday’s results were: Tauranga (R. Bailey and B. Hartley), 3h 53m 18s, 1; Auckland (J. Gold water and B. Watson) 3h 54m 11s, 2; Christchurch (G. Mander and M. Barriball) 3h 54m 225, 3; Paremata (L. Andrews and B. Steele) 3hr • 5.4 m 40s, 4. The second race, sailed in very light winds at Pcrirua today, resulted: Paremata 1. Wellington 2, Otago 3.
