Cliff Rescue At Smugglers’ Cove
Cliff-climbing at Smugglers’ Cove can have its drawbacks, especially when the ground starts giving way, as Mrs J. Sutherland, of Whangarei, found this week. Accompanied by Mrs A. J. Wilkinson, she had walked along the beach and began climbing a steep cliff between the and Home Point. When halfway up Mrs Sutherland took fright when the loose earth began slipping from under her feet and remained still, calling for Mrs Wilkinson to get a rope. Mrs Wilkinson hurried up the hill leading to Urquhart’s Bay and on reaching the top soon attracted the attention of Miss Marie Sheehan, who was camping with her parents a considerable distance away. Miss Sheehan rail along the bay and informed four Auckland yachtsmen of Mrs Sutherland’s plight. WITH AID OF ROPE The yachtsmen, together _ with Milan Mcßae, Mr and Mrs “Sandy” McNabb and Master Joe Sheehan, gathered ropes and* then raced over the hill to the cliff, while Mrs McNaob comforted Mrs Wilkinson, who had re>ceived a considerable shock. ' The rescue party, led by Sheehan, climbed the cliff and tied a rope to a nearby tree. Assisted by her rescuers, Mrs Sutherland was then able to reach the safety of the rocks in an exhausted condition.
