Record Largo Tonnage
AUCKLAND, Wed. (Sp.)-A total cf 80.000 tons, or four times the normal tonnage for the period, was on board overseas ships in- port at Auckland between December 04 and January 10, stated ihe chairman of the Cargo Control Committee (Mr G. J. Browne) yesterday. Although over half i'he cargo had been removed by last Friday the committee wanted owners to cooperate in moving the rest as soon as possible. At present' rO,OOO tons of imported goods were stored in the wharf sheds and there was 3600 tons in the Harbour Board stores, said Mr Browne. Considering the season of the year the committee thought that importers, carrying and receiving agents and the Harbour Board staff had cooperated very well in relieving the congestion in port. In the next week the number of departures of overseas ships would balance the arrivals and after that ships would not arrive in such close succession, said Mr Browne.
The critical period had passed, but the inadequate wharf facilities made it necessary to maintain speed in removing cargoes.
