National Sale Of Yearlings Begins

WELLINGTON, Wed. (P.A.)—The annual national sales of thoroughbred yearlings,.which will extend over four days, opened at Trenthum stables today before a large atlendence of breeders, owners and racing enthusiasts. A number of overseas buyers are present. Three hundred and one vendors are represented in the catalogue, the offerings being the products of 71 stallions, of whom 16 arc represented for the first occasion.

The catalogue embraces 510 lots, but the number has been reduced slightly by defections as the result of mishaps prior to departure or en route. The first stock of Lord Bobs to be offered, a brown colt from the Psychology mare Sigma, went to 900 guineas, but the vendor declined to quit at that figure. ' '

Bidding became spirited with the entry of a brown coll by the imported Finis, from the Chief Ruler mare Rulette, and thus a half-brother to Subadar, Tactical and Challette.

BROUGHT MOO GNS. Mr M. Grogan, acting on behalf of Mr F. Barber, of Sydney, made an initial bid of 1000 guineas and finally bought it for 1400 guineas. Other principal sales were:

On a/c D. M. Douglas, Te Mahanga, bay filly by Bulandshar—Climax; P. J. Smith (Sydney), 425 guineas. On a-'c E. A. Rattray, Ricearton, brown colt by Finis —Rulette; M. Grogan, as agent, 1400 guineas.

On a/c J. G. and I. R. Donald, Featherston), bay colt by Balloch —Kotou; T. J. Smith (Sydney), 950 guineas. On a/c Curtis Brothers, Otanc. bay colt by Gold Nib—Court Lady; J. G.
