Fun Of The Fair Begins At Dunedin
DUNEDIN, Wed. (P.A.).-—Thousands thronged the Caledonian Ground at Dunedin last night for the official opening of the fun fair and the switching on of the city’s centennial illuminations by the Mayor (Mr D. C. Cameron).
Large queues were waiting outside all the gates before they opened at 7 p.m. and cars were parked in every conceivable spot for blocks around the ground. “Let the lights go on and let the fun start.’’ said Mr Cameron as he pressed the button which linked up the special circuit connecting the thousands of lights in the city’s illumination scheme.
Although the crowd was estmated to be in excess of 10,000 it was quiet. The customary shrieks of excited children were missed and the gathering was almost dismal until a few less self-conscious of the younger people commenced to patronise the amusement devices. The chief attraction of th’4 fun fair, which does not compare in novelty devices with the South Seas Exhibition and the Dominion Centenary amusement nark in Wellington in 1940. is an electric speedway, a close relation of the familiar “dodgems.”
