DUNEDIN, Tue. (P.A.)—Singles play was continued today in the Dominion bowling championships which are being held in Dunedin.

When the morning play opened 440 survivors from yesterday were taking part. They included 110 players who had won three games and completed the day with two lives in hand.

The weather was fine and warm and the greens were running faster than yesterday, although not as fast as they were before the recent rain.

The principal game in the fourth round at St Kilda was that between Had win (Lower Hutt) and F. Firth (Mt Albert), both unbeaten yesterday. Hadwin was in excellent form and won 20—11. This was a fairly comfortable victory, but the play was more even today than yesterday SORTED OUT Except for one or two unexpected defeats the better players had sorted themselves out. G. Tatterson (Rakaia) had a close shave against Lee (Sydenham), and only maintained his unbeaten record by 19—17. Bremner (Epsom) met Exelby (Frankton) in the fourth round. This was a hard-fought game between two players cf a high standard, Exelby prevailing ou tjie last head 17—16. Two other prominent bowlers in S. Brewere (Invercargill RSA) and J. Stapleton (Sydenham) had a close finish, the former winning 21—19. A former pairs’ winner, Tyrrell (Mornington) beat Campbell .(Sydenham), 17—15. VELLA DEFAULTS Last year’s singles ■ champion, Vella (Onehunga) was unbeaten yesterday, but defaulted to Callaghan (Te Aroha). Under medical advice, -he has withdrawn from competition. Spearman (Christchurch RSA) entered the fifth round unbeaten. Spencer (Invercargill RSA) continued his winning way in the fourth round, beating Erridge (Arrow), conqueror of Redpath (Linwood) by. 20 — 14.

Smith (North End) was another to enter the fifth round unbeaten, as was Livingstone (Onehunga). VAUGHAN ELIMINATED The feature of play before lunch was the elimination of Vaughan (Caledonian), who lost one life yesterday when he went down to Tyrrell (Mornington). In one of the closest games of the day the present Southland singles champion, W. Marshall, beat Vaughan, 19—17. Cnehunga representatives who were to the fore today were J. H. Mingins and J. Macklow.

Up to the sixth round Mingins was still unbeaten. Macklow went under to W. R. Hawkins (Frankton), 20—14, hi the fourth game, but entered the sixth round, beating E. S. Davis Otago), who had had a 32—2 win yesterday. , v Livingstone (Cnehunga) was unbeaten after five games. Other two-lifers left after the fifth round included Hawkins (Frankton), Henry (Sydenham), Tyrrell (Mornington) and Forrester (Caledonian).
