Conscience Money Paid To State
New Zealand people still yield to the dictates of their conscience. Periodically sums are paid to the Government and acknowledged in the Gazette.
The latest list records payments exceeding £6O “forwarded by persons unknown as conscience money to the New Zealand Government.” Troubled consciences have resulted in the Land and Income Tax Department receiving the largest share, with two payments each of £lO and one of £B/10/-.
The Public Works Department comes next with two payments, one cf £2O and the other of a humble 2/6. Amounts of £2, £3/12/6 and £3 14/6 have been foi’warded to the Treasury Department; £l/5/- and £2/5/to the Army Department; £l/0/7 and £l/10/- to the Customs Department; and £1 and 5/- to the War Assets Realisation Boai'd. Conti-ibutions of £1 each to the Railways, Rehabilitation and Social Security Departments complete the list.
