Fast For Unity
NEW DELHI, Mon. GO a.m.). Gandhi told a prayer meeting that he was undertaking a fast from tomorrow for an indefinite period to bring about Hindu-Moslem unity.
The Indian representatives at a meeting of the Joint Defence Council yesterday angrily protested against a refusal by Pakistan to release 30 Tempest fighter aircraft, now in Karachi, which India badly needs for the war in Kashmir, says the Daily Telegraph's Lahore correspondent. The aircraft should be flown to India under the agreement for a division of military stores.
The Prime Minister of Pakistan (Liaquat Ali Khan) refused to listen to the protests, claiming that India herself had not observed the agreement.
The deputy Prime Minister of India (Vallabhai Patel) said in New Delhi that India could not reasonably be aslted to release Pakistan’s cash balances when an armed conflict was in progress.
He was answering charges which the Pakistan Minister of Finance (Ghulanv Mohamed) had made that India was indulging in political blackmail by delaying the transfer of £42.000,000. Although the United Nations Security Council has extended no invitation, Sardar Mohammed Ibrahim, President of the Provisional Government of Azad (Free) Kashmir, is leaving on January 14 for New York to present the Azad Government’s viewpoint. “The United Nations gave Indonesia a hearing, and must give us a hearing," he said.
