Four Feet Of Hailstones Cause Roofs To Collapse
SYDNEY, Tue. (11.30 a.m.). —Icy winds and drizzling .rain made yesterday the coldest January day in Sydney for five years. A succession of 2S wet days since December 1 has given the highest rain recording for the period in 27 years.
Because of the rain and cold, electricity blackouts were caused in some suburbs. Several country towns suffered hail damage, and at Boggabri, in northwest New South Wales, a phenomenal hailstorm caused roofs and gutterings to collapse under four feet of hailstones. At Coonamble ice two feet thick formed on many buildings during a freakish storm last night. Floods have isolated all Northern
Queensland, making roads and railways impassable north of Cardwell. The main cause of the isolation is the Murray River. Cairns is a sheet of water with children canoeing in some streets On Sunday night 4.68 in. of rain'fell at Bodalla. and 3.73 in. at Moruya. Heavy rain in the Rivenna caused further damage to crops. The township of Tully in Queensland has been isolated by floods and washouts.
