Ruawai Will Beach Again At Rangi Pt

The 291-ton steamer. Ruawai. the captain of which has received a second detaining order forbidding him to take her to sea, loaded tea-tree fuel at the Rawcne wharf yesterday in order to move to Rangi Point, opposite Opononi, where the vessel can be beached on a hard bed for an inspection of the hull. Repairs were made to the engines yesterday, and the vessel began to get steam up as soon as possible. The second detaining order was issued because, in the opinion of the Department, the Ruwai was not fit to put out from the Hokianga Harbour. The 325-ton steamer Wairua, which is practically a sister-ship of the Ruawai, has been running excellently for the past 35 years, according to the Secretary of Marine (Mr W. C. Smith). The Wairua was also owned by the Kaipara Steamship Company. After being taken over by the Marine Department she was overhauled at Auckland and received new engines, which improved her speed by more than two knots. She was introduced to the Foveaux Strait ferry service two week ago.
