Whangarei Mayor Congratulates Dunedin

Congratulations to the people of Dunedin on the completion of Otago’s centenary have been sent by the Mayor of Whangarei (Mr W._ Jones) in a telegram to the Mayor of Dunedin.

"On behalf of the burgesses of Whangarei it is with pleasure that I accept the privilege to convey to the citizens of Dunedin a message of congratulation on the occasion of the celebration of the centenary of the province of Otago,” the Mayor’s telegram stated. “Today marks for Otago the completion of 100 years as a province and that period represents a large proportion of New Zealand’s history. “As a Dunedin-born I also add my admiration for your city in its present achievement.” /

CAT—OR . . . ? Considerable speculation was aroused among passers-by in one of Whangarei’s most crowded streets by the sight of a piece of fur waving proudly in the breeze from the top of a motor car aerial. Some onlookers were of the opinion that a cat had jumped too high and scraped ihe points of the mast, leaving a portion of its anatomy behind; others thought, from the size and quality of the fur that a woman might have ventured too close-and had part of her coat carried away—though the elevation of the “flag” would not seem to bear this out. A more prosaic explanation was that someone, efthei' the. owner or a “wag,” had decided that the car needed some extra decoration, with rather comical results.
