Last New Country
American ex-servicemen who migrated to Sydney said that Australia was “the last new country left in the world.”
The liner Marine Phoenix on one trip brought 112 of them and 40 had Australian wives.
The Commonwealth Government contributed 140 dollars (£43/15/-) towards the cost of each immigrant’s fare.
Some students will take courses at Australian universities, under the G.I. Bill of Rights, which provides a subsidy during training and rehabilitation courses.
