Steamer Ruawai Beached At Rawene

A SECOND detaining order has been served on Captain H. Stanaway forbidding him to take the 291-ton steamer Ruawai to sea again from Rawene. An earlier order was served before the Ruawai left Helensville for Auckland last Wednesday without a certificate of seaworthiness, according to the Marine Department.

The second order was issued under the Shipping and Seamen Act by the Secretary of Marine (Mr W. C. Smith) and served on the captain by Constable Ilollinshead, of Rawene, at Opononi. The Marine Department Superintendent and harbourmaster at Dargaville (Captain J. M. Dutch) travelled to Opononi to make investigations. The owner or the vessel was notified last September of the work needed to bring her up to required standards, j but according to the Marine Depart- ! mc-nt, the Ruawai is still not fit to go to sea. Repairs to the condensers are necessary, and the Ruawai was towed from Opononi to Rawene on Sunday afternoon. ON OPPOSITE SHORE The vessel was beached at Rawene this morning for an inspection of any damage which might have been caused when she scraped the Hokianga ! bar. | The beach was too muddy to allow more than an examination of the propeller, but this was found to be in good condition. It is intended to refloat the Ruawai and run her aground on a harder beach, probably on the shore opposite j Opononi, where a fuller inspection SjCan be carried out.
