RUAPEKAPEKA ANNIVERSARY Yesterday, January 11, was the 101st anniversary of the Battle of Ruapekapeka Pa. which marked the end of the Northern Maori Wars and heralded the close of troubled period in Northland’s history. On. December 27, Colonel Despard, under order from Sir George Grey, arrived at the pa with 1940 men (including Maori allies) and 10 guns. Opposed to him were 560 rebels under Hone Heke and Kawiti. The battle opened with a cannonade of the strongly-fortified pa, which destroyed the outer palisade. On January 11 the rebels held a church service as it was the custom to cease fighting on a Sunday. A Maori friendly to the British, reconnoitred and signalled 100 men under Colonel Despard that all was quiet. A charge was made and the rebels driven out of the pa. Their losses were heavy—l2 chiefs and an unknown number of others. The British losses were 12 killed and 30 wounded. Peace was declared two weeks later. These are for those who know values at Henry Wilson’s.
