Work On Aorangi Nearly Finished
AUCKLAND, Sat. (Sp.)—The Union Steam Ship Company hopes to have the Aorangi commissioned in April and the Monowai in June.
The company’s managing director (Mr J. N. Greenland, of Wellington) said this yesterday before he left by the Marine Phoenix for Canada and England. Both vessels are undergoing reconversion In Australia after being used by the Navy during the war.
The Aorangi’s schedule, when she resumed the Vancouver run, had not yet been arranged and no bookings were being taken in New Zealand. There had been plenty of inquiries in Canada, however, and names of prospective passengers were being noted at that end. He estimated that the cost of reconverting the Aorangi was now nearing £1,000,000.
Mr Greenland is going to Canada and England to try to hasten the building of the new ships the company had on order and to look for more tonnage.
The company is seeking two or three more cargo vessels.
