Hikurangi Miners At Kamo Monday

Forty-five Hikurangi miners will commence work at the state mine at Kamo on Monday morning. Arrangements for their employment were discussed yesterday at a conference between delegates from the Kamo and Hikurangi Miners’ Union and the mine manager (Mr J. Hadcrof t).

In an interview this morning Mr Hadcroft said that the 45 ex-Waro miners would be chiefly engaged on reconstructional work until sufficient coal-winning places could be made to employ them on coal production. Arrangements were also to be made to increase the capacity of transport on the main drive to almost double. This would be achieved by installing a double-drum haulage system which would enable a full rake of trucks to be brought to the surface while an empty rake was sent down. Considering that the mine had been standing idle during the holiday period, the output and attendance during the first week of state ownership had been quite satisfactory, he said. RESPOND TO APPEAL Mr Hadcroft pointed out that although their holidays normally extended to January 9, the majority of the miners had commenced work on January 5 in response to a Dominionwide appeal for more coal production. January 5, 6 and 7 were worked although the miners were legally entitled to them as holidays owing to three statutory holidays falling in fhe Christmas and New Year period. The miners were paid double time for the days worked and at the same time received ordinary holiday pay for the same days. About 60 per cent of them returned to work on Monday, the number increasing to 70 per cent by the end of the week. This rate of attendance was considered satisfactory in view of the circumstances, Mr Hadcroft said.

The Hikurangi Miners’ Union will meet tomorrow to receive reports from their delegates to Friday’s conference on the proposed arrangement of duties.

On Monday morning they will be taken by bus to Kamo, where they will bring the number of employees at the state mine to 165.
