90-Run Sixth Wicket Stand By Scott, Burke

PLUNKET SHIELD

AUCKLAND, Sat. (Sp.)—Weather conditions were perfect when the Auckland-Wellington Plunket Shield match was resumed at Eden Park this morning. There was no play yesterday after the luncheon adjournment on account of the rain, and the wicket and outfield were a little greasy when the players went out today. Scott (34) and Taylor (7) faced the bowling of Dumbleton and Challies. Auckland was not happily situated, with three down for 79.

Taylor used his feel to the pitch of the ball and was much more aggressive than his partner, who was content to remain on the defensive. Taylor was rather severe on Challies, who gave way to McLean. The change did not affect Taylor, who continued to apply the wood to anything short of a length. With 106 on the board and his score at 30, however, Taylor fell to a splendid catch on the leg side by C. S. Dempster. He jumped into a full toss from Dumbleton but the Wellington captain threw the ball into the air in lightning fashion. Deas joined Scott and the batsmen had their backs to the wall. They added 32 in 59 minutes and then Deas glanced a ball from Murray and Tindill snapped up a nice catch. Five wickets were then down for 138. Burke came in to join Scott in a valuable stand against bowling that gave little away and they were still togetteer at lunch when the total had been lifted to 164. O’Neill had sent down 10 overs for 13 runs.

SCOTT GETS CENTURY Scott and Burke batted more freely after lunch and as at Dunedin played sheet-anchor roles for their side. Scott had two narrow escapes at 97. He glanced a gall from Dumbleton. I Tindill got his gloves to it but dropped the catch. In the next over from Murray he almost chopped a ball on to his ofTstump. He reached his century with a three off Murray after having been at the wicket 235 minutes. Burke was clean bowled next ball for a fine 42. 1 The pair had carried the total from five for 138 to six for 228. WELLINGTON, Sat. (Sp.)—Fourteen players will come to New Zealand in the All-Australia women’s cricket team which leaves Sydney by air on March 17 for a month’s tour.

Matches were to have been played at Auckland, Matamata, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin, Greymouth and Nelson, but the lateness of the team’s arrival may make it necessary to amend the itinerary. A North Island v South Island match has been arranged for the first week in February at Wellington to assist the New Zealand selectors (Messrs C. J. Oliver, Wellington, and W. A. Hadlee, Canterbury). NSW v S. Ausl-raSia

SYDNEY, Sat.—After the opening batsmen had put on 124 runs for the first wicket, New South Wales failed to maintain the high scoring rate in a Sheffield Shield match against South Australia yesterday, and at stumps had lost seven wickets for 305 runs (Morris 78, Lukeman 52, Barnes 85). Mangonui v Hokianga The Mangonui cricket reps needed runs in the first innings of their match against Hokianga today. The game is being played on the Kaitaia A. and P. Oval, where the turf is heavy from overnight rain. At stake is the King'don Shield held by Mangonui since before the war. At 12.30 p.m. Mangonui had 108 runs up for the loss of 5 wickets. After Russell had given the side a good start three batsmen went cheaply. W. Edwards failed to score, and W. Hoddle went for 2. Mangonui was then 4 for 85. Mackintosh and R. Harrison improved the position before the latter was bowled by Stevens for 14. Russell and Foster put in 62 for the opening partnership in an hour. Russell hit five sixes and three fours and was caught off R. Gregory, who had taken four for 15 at lunch.
