Heavy Increase In Holiday Mails

Heavy increases in mail traffic at the Whangarei Chief Post Office were reported over the Christmas period of 1947 as compared with the same period of 1946. The following are the comparative figures for the two periods: MAILS (DECEMBER 17 TO 24) Despatched (1946 figures first): 588 bags of mail, 690; 170 bags of parcels, 243. Received: 597 bags of mail, 703; 378 bags of parcels, 413. TELEGRAMS (December 21 to 24) Forwarded (1946 figures first): 1821, 1878; received: 2384, 2510. Outward toll calls: 2339, 2816. Transmitted telegrams dropped in number from 2929 in 1946 to 1822 in 1947.

The reason for this decrease is that extra circuits were made available between Auckland and Russell and Kaikohe and Kaitaia, thus eliminating much of tne traffic formerly handled through Whangarei.
