Round The World In Amphibian Jeep
NEW YORK, Fri. (11 a.m.).—Frederick Benjamin Carlin, a 35-year-old Australian, is to embark from New York on a unique round-the-world trip in a Ford amphibian jeep. Carlin, who served with the Royal Indian Engineers in India, Iraq, Persia, Palestine, Syria and Italy, hopes to complete the trip in five months. With a cruising speed of five miles an hour, Carlin’s “creation” has a marine radius of 2200 miles without extra petrol tanks. He will carry two-way radio equipment.
The first leg of the journey will be from New York to the Azores and Casablanca, then by land through Cairo, Baghdad, Delhi and Calcutta, thence to Akyab, Burma, by water, thence to Bangkok and Saigon by land, then a series of water hops to the Philippines, Palau, Truk, Bikini, Wake, Midway and Honolulu to San Francisco.
Carlin expects to start within a fortnight.
