Attack
About COO armed Arabs swept from the Syrian hills into the north-east corner of Palestine today and surrounded two Jewish settlements at Szold and Dan.
This is reported by Army headquarters. British troops later drove off the Arabs, who attacked communal farms and blew up the waterworks of Dan. Haganah claimed that Fawzi el Kawkji, a prominent Arab rebel leader, lead the raiders. Haganah also said it had launched a big attack on Tireh, a village at the foot of Mt Carmel, because it was an Arab meeting place and harboured Arab snipers. The attackers set fire to a number of houses. The Palestine Government instructed the Minister at Damascus to make strong representations to Syria about the Arabs’ attack.
The British United Press correspondent says three Jews were killed and eight wounded in the attack, which lasted for seVen hours.
