New TEA Captain
AUCKLAND. Sat. (Sp.)—Senior First Officer J. C. Shephard has been promoted to the rank of captain. Tasman Empire Airways announced yesterday. Captain Shephard, who has made several Tasman crossings, has nearly 4000 flying hours to his credit. He enlisted in the RNZAF in 1939. His operational service was with Sunderlands and Catalinas of 223 Sunderland Squadron in Scotland, and in West Africa with No. 490 Squadron. After his return to New Zealand, Captain Shephard served in the South Pacific Transport Service on Sunderland flyingboats before joining the staff of Tasman Empire Airways in June, 1945. He was awarded the Air Force Cross for outstanding service during the war.
