Rangiahua Grows Biggest Cabbages
Whatever else Rangiahua may be f< mour. for it is now certain that it has achieved for itself the name of being the area where the largest cabbages in the North are grown. On December 10 it was reported in the Northern Advocate that Mr Harry Whittaker had grown a real outsize in cabbages.
Mr Whittaker’s plant grew to a size of 4ft 4in in circumference and weighed almost 291 b in weight.
Placed on view in a local store this huge vegetable attracted considerable attention, and was later acquired by a fortunate household who seemingly had a cabbage supply for days in one lot. Not to be outdone a sister-in-law, Mrs Herbert Whittaker, has now sent to Whangarei, where it has been placed on display at a local seedsmen’s shop, a cabbage slightly bigger in heart than that grown by her brother-in-law. This has a heart with a circumference of 4ft 6in and weighs a full 291 b.
