Unusual Misadventure

KAITAIA, .Thu. (Sp.).—Unusual circumstances surrounded the misadventure of an elderly man at Houhora Heads, popular Far Northern holiday spot, during the New Year period. Camping with his son, Mr C. Hoodless, and his daughter-in-law on the slopes of Mount Camel, Mr C. H. Hoodless, aged 76, suffered loss of memory and after being missing for almost 24 hours was located in a dangerous and exposed position on the sea coast some nine miles distant. He was found to have left the camp on Friday morning. Police, campers and visitors conducted a thorough search, but it was net until late afternoon that information was received that he had been seen by a fisherman at a remote spot on the seaward side of Mt Camel. Five men, Messrs J. Sucich, W. Tahitahi, C. Petera, I. Gaelic, and S. Ford, travelled on horseback to this point which they reached as darkness fell. After camping out for the night they found the missing man next morning bv the sea at the foot of a 300 ft cliff. LITTLE THE WORSE

He had spent the night in the open. Not without difficulty they carried him up the cliff and back over broken country to Houhora, from where he was brought to the Kaitaia Hospital. This was on Saturday morning'. He was discharged from hospital on Wednesday little the worse for his experience. Remarkable features were that the missing man, whose health is not good, was able to cover the distance from the camp to the spot where he was found and to negotiate the rocky cliff on his own, and that he survived the night in the open.

He had no recollection of the occurrence.
