Defied Order By Marine Department?

AUCKLAND, Fri. (P.A.l—Carrying a volunteer crew, the 291-ton steamer Ruawai left Helensville for Auckland on Wednesday, allegedly in defiance of an order issued by the Marine Department. It is stated by the department that the vessel, which has been laid up for several years, is unseaworthy. It is stated that the ship carries a crew of 14, including the present owner. The acting Superintendent of Mercantile Marine at Auckland (Captain S. J. Atkins) confirmed a report that the vessel sailed without a proper certificate of seaworthiness.

He said action would definitely be taken by the department when the vessel reaches Auckland. It is understood that the boiler and some machinery in the vessel have been sold and it is intended to dispose of other gear when the ship arrives.
