Death Of Richard Tauber

LONDON, Thu.—The death occurred in London today of the noted singer and actor. Richard Tauber. He was 55 years of age. Tauber had an operation in November.

He planned to take a month’s holiday in Switzerland with his wife before touring Australia and New Zealand. In London he fell ill and entered a nursing home, where he collapsed and died.

Tauber was born at Linz, in Austria, and began to study music at the Frankfurt Conservatorium when 16 years of age. In 1912 he made his debut at the Chemnitz Municipal Theatre, of which his father was director, as Tarnino in the “Magic Flute.” £IOOO A WEEK Such was his success that a few days later he was given a five-year engagement at the Royal Opera in Dresden. In 1922 he moved to Berlin, where he became very popular.

In 1931 he was engaged at £10(10 a ■week to sing in Lehar’s “The Land of Smiles.” in London.

His singing of “You Are My Heart’s Delight” took England by storm. He was said to receive £750 for every gramophone record he made In 1936 he was married in London to Diana Napier, English film actress. He became a naturalised British subject in March, 1940.
