AUCKLAND. Thur. (P.A.)— In the year ended December 31. 273 overseas vessels, aggregating 2.304.408 gross tons, were handled in the port of Auckland, which was an increase of 29 vessels, or 213,151 tons, compared with the previous year.

For the year ended September. 1947, y whjch is the basis on which the Auckland Harbour Board compiles cargo figures, imports from overseas, including intercolonial and islands cargo handled at Auckland, totalled 1.186,456 tons, compared with 919,505 tons landed here in the year ended September, 1946.

However, exports for the year ended September, 1947, showed a marked decrease, 340.773 tons having been loaded at Auckland, against 422.817 in the previous year.

The decrease is largely explained by the fact that in 1946 large shipments of relief food were shipped to India, Egypt, the Straits Settlement and Germany at the express wish of the British Government.

Last year 3827 coastal vessels passed through the port, an increase of 80 compared with the previous year's figure.
