Dunedin Hostel For Immigrants

DUNEDIN, Wed. (1 p.m.)—Designed to accommodate 150 male British immigrants. a hostel is nearing completion at the former military camp at St Kilda. The conversion of the military camp into a well-appointed hostel is in preparation for the arrival in Dunedin .it the end of the month of the city’s first quota of male British, immigrants who will enter industries in the district. The assistant district superintende.nl of the Labour and Employment Department (Mr J. A. Jackson) said there had been a good deal of criticism in Dunedin over the meagre share of immigrants allotted this city. Indeed, so far there had been only about a score, mainly women, for hospital work. It had been suggested repeatedly that the district had been by-passed in favour of the North Island, but lack of suitable living quarters had really been the stumbling block so far as Dunedin was concerned.
