Long Delays In Developing Films
The present- delay in the developing of photographic films was caused entirely by staff difficulties, not materials, said the president of the Camera Club in Whangarei (Mr Steveson) today. During the war films were in short supply and dark-rooms reduced their staff accordingly. With the recent influx of films, the demand for developing and printing had exceeded the capabilities of the present small staffs. Mr Stevenson said that there had been no increase in prices for developing and printing for some time. Consequently, the wages offered did not come up to the standard of other occupations. . To train a new girl in developing and printing would take fully 12 months, but also to be contended with was the present shortage of female labour. Before the war most firms maintained a same-day developing service, but today delays of up to three weeks occur.
