MARINES SAIL
A detachment of marines estimated at 1000 sailed in two large transports from Morehead City, North Carolina, today for the Mediterranean. Their departure was a day ahead of schedule, but no reason was given for the changed plans. There was little excitement as the men filed up the gangplanks. Navy officials refused to give the size of the detachment, but wharfside observers said it was 1000. Observers said bulldozers and possibly tanks were taken aboard. Other equipment included food, petrol and oil.
Several trucks drove to the pier flying red flags denoting ammunition cargoes. Much equipment was shielded from view.
