Record Hay Season Likely
KAITAIA, Tue. (Sp.) are for a record haymaking season in the Far North for 1947-48. Mild spring weather and ample early summer rainfall boosted grass growth to a degree already reflected in record dairy production from the Kaitaia Coop. Dairy Company's factory, and most dairymen by now have also harvested ample hay for next winter's supplementary feeding.
The English grasses which mature early in the Far North gave crops of up to 50 per cent greater than last year. The recent hot weather, following rainfall of earlier weeks, has also resulted in phenomenal growth of paspalum. Wise dairvmon have harvested tins during the past fortnight when the paspalum leaf was at its best; prior to the formation of coarse seedstalks. • Christmas and New Year holidays provided ideal haymaking weather. In some cases, however, late-cut crops were caught by the light rain which fell yesterday. Crops have been heaviest at Victoria Valley, the Kaitaia-Awanui flats, and in the region further north.
