Central Otago In Grip Of Heat Wave
DUNEDIN Tue. (P.A.).—The high temperatures which have been recorded in Central Otago over the past few days show no signs of declining. Intense heat was reported from several centres yesterday.
Shade temperatures at Ranfurly hovered around 92 degrees and conditions were uncomfortable for residents. Livestock also suffered from the extreme warmth and there were instances of fowls succumbing. Maximum temperatures at Roxburgh rose to nearly 90 degrees while Alexandra, Cromwell and Clyde were similarly affected. An average reading for the past week of 96 degrees was reported from Arrowtown. On the hottest day the thermometer registered 122 degrees |r tj;e sun. j The yield from barley, oat and pea crops will be considerably reduced on account of the heat and dryness. Queenstown’s temperature of 93.4 degrees on Friday was the highest recorded since 1934. The weather is ideal for holiday'makers and all swimming resorts pro being freely patronised.
