Vandals Set Fire To Smugglers' Pohutukawa

VANDALS set light to the Smugglers’ Bay pohutukawa tree which was yesterday reported to have been damaged by fire.

A Whangarei tree-lover who saw the tree after the fire said that it had been deliberately lit where it would do most damage. He spoke highly of the action of a party of yachtsmen, who, sighting the fire as they approached Smugglers’ Bay. sailed into Urquhart's Bay and walked over the hill to extinguish the blaze. Unfortunately they had been unable to put the ilre completely out, and when ho saw the tree on the following day it was still burning at some'height from the ground. The only fire-fighting equipment he could find was an empty beer-bottle. Carting water from the sea about 50 yards away in this bottle he was able to put the fire out. In his opinion, however, the damage had already been done to the tree and it is unlikely to survive.
