Reject Sweeping Building Bill

SYDNEY, Thu. (1 p.m.)—The Building Operations Bill, by which it was proposed to confer wide powers over the building industry on the Minister of Building Materials (Mr Matthews), was rejected by the New South Wales Legislative Council by‘ one vote. Sir Henry Manning said that the bill was one of the most far-reaching moves towards nationalisation of the industry with which the Council had had to deal.

It was undesirable because it would give the Minister of Building Materials tyrannical power over the industry to the detriment of home builders. More houses could be built by private enterprise than under a strict Government-controlled plan. The Council refused, by 27 votes to 26. to agree to the second reading of the bill.
