NEWS OF THE DAY
PORTLAND CEMENT Three kilns are being operated at the Portland cement works following the arrival of the collier Kartigi with a cargo of South Island coal. Prior to the ship’s arrival, the works were producing at half capacity, owing to the coal shortage. The works managei (Mr E. Leese) said today that if another coal cargo was i-eceived in the next few days, it was hoped to maintain three kilns until the Christmas period.
STAMPED WITH ANNOYANCE Apparently a fault developed in the bell alarm system at the Manse Street, Whangarei, level crossing this morning. The bell kept ringing for anything up to half an hour, causing a considerable number of motorists to stop and wait for the train that did not pass. One driver of a very lowslung car was unable to see up or down the line and was forced to leave his conveyance and walk on to the line. On discovering that the alarm was, this time, a hoax, he was seen to stamp his foot with gusto before driving across the line.
