Physical Education Bursaries Extended
WELLINGTON.—With the object of giving all suitable candidates an opportunity to apply for one of the bursaries which were available in physical education at the University of Otago, applications would be received •up to January 15, 1948, said the Minister of Education (Mr McCombs) today. The value of each bursary was £7O a year, with an additional £4O a year if the successful applicant was obliged to live away from home. The full fees for the course would also be paid. The tenure of the bursary would be three years at the University of Otago. Successful applicants would be required to give a guarantee that they would serve in physical education work of a type approved by the Director of Education for a period of three years where the bursary had been of a value of £7O for three years, and for | four years if the bursary had been of a total value of £llO a year for three years. These periods of service would be reduced proportionately where the bursary was for a shorter period. Applicants must be not less than 17 years of age on December 31, and must have been accredited for or have' passed the university entrance examination, or have some equivalent or higher qualification. Eecause of the shortage of teachers, no teacher in training or certificated, was eligible for the bursary.
