Bradman Near New Records

BRISBANE, Sat. GO a.m.)—The amazing Don Bradman scored his 101st century yesterday in the first cricket test match against India. It was his fourth century in four first-class games this season and his third against India on this tour. Although Bradman is now in his 40th year he showed some of his old peak form with savage hooks, smashing drives and beautifully-placed cuts. His century took 177 minutes, but he was the bulwark of the batting against solid bowling. Bradman hit 18 fours.

With Hassett, Bradman added 101 in 89 minutes for the third wicket. With Miller he added 75 in an hour, Miller scoring six.

A crowd of nearly 10,000 defied the day-long threat of rain mainly because of the Indians’ great popularity. India was on top in the first hour, during which Australia lost Brown, but then came Bradman to dominate the game. He won a great duel with Mankad and Amarnath. BRADMAN v INDIA Bradman’s mastery over Mankad and Irani's two dropped catches have placed Australia in a strong position says Duleepsinhji. Bradman, with powerful hooks, drives, cuts and typical Bradmanish flicks to leg, was more like the Don of the old days. Bradman was a master of all the bowling, which he played with the greatest ease. His pace from his chanceless century to the 150 mark was amazing. The crowd had hardly stopped cheering the century when he reached 150. The Australian innings has turned out so far to be Bradman v India. The Indian bowlers were handicapped after tea by a wet ball. Amarnath captained the team well. His field placing was good. All the boilers kept a good length and the Indian out-cricket was the best so far of the tour. IF lIE REACHES 200 Bradman is within 40 runs of making two new cricket records. If he reaches 200 he will become the first batsman in the world to score 37 double centuries in first-class cricket and the first Australian to score double centuries against four, test countries. Bradman now shares the highest number of first-class double centuries (36l with Walter Hammond. In previous test series Bradman has scored double centuries against England, South Africa and the West Indies. Scores: AUSTRALIA—First Innings W. A. Brown, c Irani, b Armarnath 11 A.
