Sea Lions 7 Home On Whangarei Coast

Evidence that sea lions are endeavouring to re-establish themselves on the east coast neat Whangarei, is provided by the fact that another of these creatures has appeared at Whananaki, where it has made its home on a small island in the harbour. Commenting that this was the sixth sea lion to come ashoic on the Whangarei coast within recent time* Mr W. M. Fraser, said yesterday that it was quite evident that the creatures were trying to establish themselves on this coast. , , ~ He considered that they should be encouraged, as they were useful and'harmless. Mr Fraser pointed out that they were a protected species and under marine legislation it was illegal to kill them. Their skins were valueless and the fur deteriorated rapidly. For these reasons nothing was to be gained by killing them and, in the interests of science, he felt they should not bo molested in any way.
