Battle Of River Plate Memorial
In Holy Trinity Church, Montevideo, are five memorial tablets erected by their shipmates at various dates since 1845 to the memory of members of the South American Squadron. The rector of the church has suggested that a memorial should be erected there to the officers and men bf the squadron who lest their lives in the Battle of the River Plate. “While the rector would be willing to endeavour to raise funds by local public subscription for this purpose, he has thought it right to ask the Admiralty to find out from the senior officers of the squadron whether they would wish the memorial to be erected by the Royal Navy in accordance with precedent,” says an official announcement. ABOUT £330 NEEDED Admiral Sir Henry Harwood, RearAdmiral W. E. Parry, Rear-Admiral C. H. L. Woodhouse and Captain F. S. Bell have accordingly been consulted. They consider that an effort should be made to raise funds for this memorial from among their ships’ companies in this action and have agreed to contribute themselves. Their Lordships desire that this proposal should be especially brought to the notice of all who were serving in His Majesty’s ships Ajax, Achilles and Exeter at the time of the action. The cost of the proposed memorial will be of the order of £330. Contributions should be sent to RearAdmiral W. E. Parry, .C. 8., Director of Naval Intelligence, Admiralty.
