Law To Bar Reds From Staying Here?

Question In House . . .

WELLINGTON, Tue. (P.A.)—When the House of Representatives met today Mr R. G. Gerard ( O—Ashburton) gave notice to ask the Prime Minister (Mr Fraser) if he intended to introduce legislation to make it unlawful for members of the Communist Party to remain in New Zealand. Mr Gerard said it was reported in the Southern Cross that the Minister of Rehabilitation (Mr Skinner) stated that every member of the Labour Party would back him up 100 per cent when he said members of the Communist Party should not be allowed to remain in Now Zealand. Mr T. L. Macdonald (O—Wallace) gave notice to ask the Prime Minister if any former military defaulters were at present being employed in Government positions. “If not, is it the Government's intention to adopt a policy whereby such employment of former military defaulters will be made possible?” asked Mr Macdonald.

After formal business, the House paid its tributes to the late Mr L. G. Lowry, formerly member for Otaki, whose death occurred last week. The House then, as a mark of respect, adojourned until 2.30 this afternoon.
