Bank Officers Want Referendum
SYDNEY, Sat. (11 a.m.).—A meeting of 2000 bank officers here decided to ask the Prime Minister (Mr Chifley) to include a referendum clause in the Banking Bill. The meeting decided that Mr Chifley should be asked to hold a referendum “to keep faith with the basic principle and plank of Labour’s platform.” An overflow of 500 bank officers listened to proceedings through amplifiers outside the hall.
The meeting cheered the Bank Officers’ Association secretary (Mr S. E. Card) when he said that bank officers were more concerned ■with the freedom of Australia than with, the prospects of a permanent job in a Commonwealth bank. Mr Card said if bank officers continued to lead the fight against nationalisation they would win.
