Hikurangi Swamp Water
No further drainage of the Hikurangi swamp water into the Northern Wairoa river is likely to eventuate in the immediate future, according to advice received by the Dargaville Borough Council from the Public Works Department. The advice came as a reply to the council’s recent action in supporting the protest of the Upper Wairoa branch of Federated Farmers against further swamp drainage into the river. Regarding the silting up of the river, to which the Upper Wairoa branch had also drawn attention, the department stated that this matter had not been investigated in recent years.
The council decided to forward the reply to the branch, but also to advise the department that the council would support any request for investigation of silting of the Northern Wairoa.
