Assembly Defeat's Two Soviet Propositions
(Rec. 1.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, Oct. 17
The Assembly’s Economic Committee rejected today a Soviet proposal to allow non-self-governing territories to by-pass colonial powers and apply direct to the Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East for associate membership.
The voting was 19 to 13 against the proposal, with 14 abstentions and many absentees.
The committee also rejected a Soviet proposal to enlarge the commission’s membership by including Middle East countries. *
• New Zealand and Australia opposed both resolutions.
