Charges Against 1 Communists Withdrawn
(Rec. 1.0.) JOHANNESBURG, Oct. 17. The prosecutor told a special court, hearing charges of sedition against nine leading South African Communists, that the Attorney-General had instructed him not to proceed with the charges. The defence yesterday successfully challenged the validity of the indictment and the circumstances of the men’s preparatory examination. The prosecutor then withdrew the charges and said a new preparatory examination would be begun today. The withdrawal of the charges was announced soon after the new examination began today. An Athens message states that 52 Greek Communists whom a courtmartial in Salonika sentenced to death on September 14 for murder of a high police official and five airmen have been executed.
