Crown Frowns On Soapbox Derbies
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. While proposed soapbox derbies in various centres would probably be adequately controlled, there would be undoubted repercussions from the contests which were most undesirable, said Mr Hackett, acting for the Minister of Transport, in a statement last night. Fatalities had occurred in the past through boys riding in trolleys, said the Minister, and contests, in spite of safety rules for their conduct, would cause a revival of trolley-riding in the streets—only too often with serious consequences to life and limb. Whether held on public roads or on private property, contests would encourage hazardous and often disastrous trolley-riding practices which otherwise were steadily disappearing.
