Waitangi Ladies’ Final Goes To 10th

Never was the leader more than two up in a hard-fought match between Mrs A. Brydon and Mrs T. Cross for the ladies’ 1947 championship at Waitangi. The game was not over until a 19th hole had been played, Mrs Brydon winning it by one stroke.

Mrs Cross won the first with a five to her opponent's six. The second they halved in sevens and were all square at the 3rd, when Mrs Brydon reversed the first hole's score. The 4th, sth, 6th and 7th were all halved. The Bth went to Mrs Brydon with a four against a five. The' ninth was halved, putting Mrs Brydon one up at the turn.

On the 10th Mrs Cross squared the match again with a five, Mrs Brydon being one stroke more. Mrs Brydon regained her lead with a bogey thi'ee at the 11th. With a six against a seven, she won the 12th and was two up. The 13th saw Mrs Cross play a superlative second, being on the green for two and winning with a bogey foui', Mrs Brydon doing it in six. The 14th was halved. Mi’s Brydon’s turn for a bogey came again at the 15th (four), making her again two up. Mrs Cross then turned in a bogey four at the 16th, having excellent luck when her long second landed at the <op of the bunker hillock. Another inch would have sent it over into trouble.

The 17th was halved and the match was dormy one. The 18th saw both make excellent drives. Mrs Cros made another splendid second on to ■he green, putting out for five against Mrs Brydon’s six. The 19th did not see spectacular golf. Mrs Cross seemed a little nervous and Mrs Brydon was on with her .hird, going down for five and winning the hole by a stroke and the match in consequence.

A captain’s trophy semi-final played off yestei’day resulted in a win for Miss M. Williams over Mrs D. A. Lusk G and 5. In the first round of the j uniox championship, Mrs E. D. Taylor beat Mrs V. Wallace two up. WAITANGI MEN Semi-finals were played in senior and intermediate championships at Waitangl yesterday. The only game played off in tthe senior section resulted in a surprise win for N.'A. Aiekin over R. D. Johnston 4 and 2. Johnston has been one of the club’s star players this season and Aickin’s win was a popular one as the odds had appeared to be against him. Aiekin will meet D. M. Lewis in the final on Sunday week. In an intermediate semi-final, P. Sutherland beat D. A. Lusk in a hard-fought match which went to tire 19th for decision. Two intermediate flight semi-finals were played, G. Wall beating J. A. Stubbs 4 and 2, C. Barker beat J. D. Hamilton 3 and 2. A medal round was also played, results being as follows: C. Filmer 90—22—G8; T. H. Poutawera 82—14—G8; G. Wall 87—17 —70; J. Cooke C. Barker 91—20—71: V. Wallace 83—11—72; J. A. Stubbs 91—18—73; W. Nutt 90—17—73. All championship finals will be played off yesterday fortnight.
