High Altitude Forests For N.Z. ?
(Special) WELLINGTON. This Day. The establishment of high altitude forests in New Zealand to counter erosion and possibly to increase timber production was discussed in- the House yesterday by Mr A. S. Sutherland (O Hauraki). He hoped full consideration would be given to such a project by the State Forest Service and the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council. In New Zealand afforestation stopped at from 3500 ft to 4000 ft. but from the example of America, exotic birch and spruce, properly planted, could be grown here at altitudes of from 5000 ft to 7000 ft. These trees would help to stop erosion which was threatening productivity an dthey would have a commercial value in years to come.
