The Whangarei Centre of the Women's Institute held its August meeting in the St John Ambulance Hall. An interesting reading on Women Hymn Writers” was given by Mrs Sirl. Mesdames Peters, Calder, Dumbleton and Steventon received birthday posies. Competitions resulted: Best pot of marmalade, Mesdames Crawshaw and Courtney equal 1, Mrs Quarrie 2. Best flower from own garden, Mrs Courtney 1, Mrs Dumbleton 2. „ Several letters of thanks for food parcels received were read from members of the English link institute, Ely. All were most grateful for the goods in the parcels. Mrs Dale gave a talk on toy making, the material used being odd scraps of no use for anything else. Among the dolls exhibited was a firm-bodied one made from a rolled-up Advocate, which was shaped for the different parts of the body. After being dressed it was a toy that would be very dear to some girl. Other toys were horses, dogs, ducks, cats, mammy dolls, elephants and a tuatara. The five children present at the meeting received a toy. , . , Mrs Dale was heartily thanked for her demonstration. .. , , Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Crawshaw, Steventon and Harris.
