One Swims Channel; Two Abandon Try

(Rec. 10 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 5. A Peruvian swimmer, Daniel Carpio, reached Shakespeare Beach, Dover, at 1 a.m. after swimming the Channel from Cape Gris Nez in 14 hours 46 minutes.

Strong tides made the swim difficult. Carpio was within five miles of the English coast for nearly eight hours. He swam the crawl stroke throughout. Carpio said the last few hundred yards were the worst. He was then feeling ill, having swallowed a lot of water.

An Egyptian, Attallah, and a Danish woman, Elna Anderson, abandoned their attempts to swim the English Channel when six miles off Dover.
