U.S. Jet Averages 503 m.p.h. In Contest
(Rec. 11 a.m.) NEW YORK, Sept. 1. Lieutenant-Colonel Benjamin Preston flashed around the 22-mile jet course at the national air races seven times today at an average speed of 503.9 miles an hour to win the jet division of the Thompson Trophy for an Air Force Shooting Star. The speed was nearly 12 miles an hour slower than the winner achieved in 1946 on a longer course, and without being restricted to standard operational performance.
