Big Snails Menace Islands' Food

(Special) WELLINGTON, This Day. Giant snails introduced into the Pacific islands by the Japanese to augment their food supply are now menacing the normal food supplies of New Ireland and New Britain. Flight Sergeant J. R. Begg, of Christchurch, who has just returned after conducting a search for the remains of missing members of the RNZAF, said the snails had multiplied to a great extent. Especially they have attacked native food sources, paw paws and the like, while plantations also have been attacked.

“After an overnight shower of rain,” said Flight Sergeant Begg, ’’there are three' snails to every square foot of roadway in New Britain, and the larger shells don’t even crack (under the weight of a jeep. The smaller ones pulp easily, however, and once the hot sun beats down on them you want a gas mask to get through.”
